| Title: | Approaching Night, Grand Canyon | ||
| Notes: |
This image was photographed at the Grand Canyon in Arizona in spring of 2004 from the south rim trail. It was very late in the afternoon and I had set up to photograph the sunset from the rim and had been working for a couple of hours. Then, in a very dramatic fashion the wind picked up and the clouds seemed to break up into a scattered or mottled appearance. As the wind blew across the canyon into my face the clouds moved towards me but were spread out across the great expanse of the canyon from the horizon on the opposite side to above my head. It is difficult to express but the spatial orientation of the clouds gave a sense of depth and scale which I had never seen before that afternoon. The sun was dropping quickly and I knew I didn’t have much time. I changed cameras from the 4x5 I had been using and mounted the Mamiya RZ67 on the tripod and photographed the scene with the 50mm wide angle lens but this lens was not sufficient to capture the full majesty or scale of the scene. Therefore, I switched to the 37mm ultra-wide angle lens and shot the scene with the camera tripod mounted and mirror-up on Kodak Portra 160 VC negative film. The horizon line reflects the ultra-wide lens but I believe the resulting print expresses well what I saw that day. |
