This image was made late
in the afternoon (Mar/2001) in Zion Canyon Utah. I used the
Toyo GX 4x5 camera with a Schneider 240mm lens (Tripod
mounted) on Kodak Portra 160 VC negative film. I have read
that the native Indians who lived in this region before the
region was explored or settled would depart the canyon
before dark because they said that after dark the spirits
came out in the canyon. I recall that when I made this
exposure it was late
and cold and the light's color temp had begun to shift to
the characteristic red/yellow hue of late afternoon. As the
light becomes more horizontal it plays on the details in the
sheer faces of these huge cliffs. It displayed a unique
grandeur. Majestic indeed --
