This image was photographed in May of 2006 at The Black Canyon of The Gunnison in Colorado at sunset.  I was returning from shooting the Painted Wall and began to notice that as the sun descended lower in the sky the light began to shift to a rich yellow/red hue and seemed to transform everything in the canyon for a few moments prior to dark.  The detail of a section of the canyon wall caught my eye and as the contrast increased and the color saturation became more striking I began to set up to make the photograph.  I used the Mamiya RZ67 with the 140mm lens (tripod mounted and mirror-up) and made the exposure on Kodak Portra 400 VC negative film.
