Title:  First Light Grand Canyon

  Notes:

This image was photographed at the break of day in May of 2004 from Mohave Point on the south rim of the Grand Canyon.  I used the Mamiya RZ67 Pro II with the Mamiya Sekor 37mm lens (tripod mounted, mirror-up with a cable release) to expose this image on Kodak Portra 160VC negative film.  I recall my surprise to find it so cold when making this exposure.  I arrived before sunrise and recall even wearing a canvas coat being quite cold and this was in May.  However, the wait was rewarded when the sun broke the horizon.  The extreme wide angle of the lens I chose to use exaggerated the curve of the horizon and made it seem as if the sun had broken over the rim of the earth and not just the canyon.  The most frequent comment I have gotten from those who have viewed the finished print is that it provokes thoughts of the end of the age... The apocalypse.  Indeed, it was a most impressive scene.  Soli Deo Gloria!
