This image was
photographed in northern Arizona (Northern Arizona and
southern Utah have many of these slot canyons). I
used the Mamiya RZ67 Pro II with the Mamiya Sekor 37mm
f/4.5 lens (tripod mounted, mirror-up and cable release)
to photograph this scene on Kodak Portra 160VC negative
film. These canyons are beautiful in an almost
"other worldly" sense. The sporadic floods which
occur here force slurry of mud and water down these
narrow canyons with great force leaving the walls
sculpted with striations. When light filters down
during the mid-day period these striations pick up the
flow of light like ribbons of light making a splendid
display of contour and light play. However, one
must take care when in these narrow places because
snakes, Black Widows and sudden flash floods can make
things very hazardous in these canyons.
