This image was photographed
on a trail on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon in Arizona.
I was impressed with the huge stone formations and sheer
cliff faces found here. It was not uncommon to
encounter sheer drops in excess of a thousand feet at
various points along the trails here. I could not help
but develop a healthy respect for the small
gnarled
pines which seemed riveted into cracks along these sheer
drops. Access to the area is limited to a few months
of the year because the remainder to the year the area is
under deep snow and bitter cold. The title of this
print is in reference to these small but tenacious trees
which truly live on the edge so to speak. I used the Mamiya RZ67 Pro II with the Mamiya Sekor 50mm ULD
wide angle lens (tripod mounted, mirror-up and cable
release) to expose this scene on Kodak Portra 160VC negative
film. This is a place of unfathomable scale.
