This image was
photographed from the rim trail along Yellowstone Canyon on
an overcast day in May of 2002. I used the Mamiya RZ67 with
the Mamiya Sekor 50mm ULD lens to expose this composition on
Fuji Velvia transparency film rated at ISO 40 (camera was
tripod mounted and mirror-up). On the day I hiked this trail
I made some of the most difficult and yet most rewarding
exposures of my life. The difficulties arose not from the
hike but from the severe wind and the extreme variation in
light intensity. On the majority of compositions of this
type I made five to six exposures bracketing around the
calculated exposure. On this image and on one other taken
the same day only one of the six proved successful. I recall
having to hold on to a small tree which grew on the point on
which I was standing to prevent the wind from lifting me
off. I will not even attempt to describe in words what this
print displays but will simply let the composition speak for
itself. Please see the quote by Rudyard Kipling on
page 10 under "Eagles Perspective" technical description for
his comments on this region. Soli Deo Gloria |
