Title: Out of the Banks, Merced River

  Notes:

In the spring of 2005 my wife Jeanie and I were in Yosemite during a time of flooding and all the streams and falls were full and in some cases over full.  It was during this time that I made this print.  This is the Merced River and I was unprepared for what I saw.  All the prints of this river I had ever seen depicted a rather tame stream with a beautiful flow but the stream in front of me was wide, full and roaring.  This image was made early one morning with intermittent fog and mist.  I tried to position the camera where it would best capture the intensity of the ferocious flow literally roaring in front of the lens. I then set the exposure time to a relatively slow shudder speed that would allow the fast moving water to “paint” on the film to enhance that sense of intense power shown there.  I used the Mamiya RZ67 with the 50mm ULD lens (tripod mounted and mirror-up) to expose the scene on Kodak Portra 160 VC negative film.
