This image was photographed
on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon on an overcast day in
May of 2003. This is a place where superlatives are
inadequate to describe the scale and in a similar vein the
range of tonal scale is virtually impossible to squeeze on
to the film surface. In the same way the color hues which I
saw here had never seen a "normal" color chart. All of these
factors combine to make this an unspeakably unique and
beautiful place. I used the Mamiya RZ67 with the Mamiya
Sekor 50mm lens (tripod mounted and mirror-up) to expose
this scene on Kodak Portra 160VC negative film. I recall how
very small I felt when standing on this point overlooking
the great canyon. |
