Title:  Redwood Forest Floor, Redwood National Part California

  Notes:

This image was photographed in May of 2006 in the Redwood National Park in northern California on a misty overcast day.  One of my greatest challenges when photographing the giant redwoods was to convey an accurate sense of the tremendous scale of these ancient trees and yet not sacrifice the intricate beauty of the forest floor beneath them.  This image is my attempt to convey that entire scope from the ferns and smaller plants which reside at the base of the redwoods under the giant canopy produced by the trees to the distant tops which can be over three hundred feet above. To accomplish this the lens was stopped down to f/32 and I invoked hyper focal distance and an exposure time of six seconds.   The oldest of these Costal Redwoods is said to have been 2,200 years old which would mean that it would have been one hundred and fifty years old at the birth of Christ.  To make this image I used the Mamiya RZ67 with the 50mm ULD lens (tripod mounted and mirror-up) to expose this image on Kodak Portra 400 VC negative film.
