This is a print which I
photographed on the Big Sur coast. My primary point of
interest was the small tree in the lower left corner of the
print. However, the more I studied the scene and the
waves pounding the cliff walls I recomposed the image in the
view finder
and this is the resulting print. I found a regal and
almost transcendent beauty along this coast. It is
easy to understand why it is such a popular area for both
photographers and painters. I used the Mamiya
RZ67 with the Mamiya Sekor 500mm APO telephoto lens (tripod
mounted and mirror-up) to expose this image on Kodak Portra
400VC negative film. Reflecting on the immense scale
seen here provokes a sense of my smallness.
