Soli Deo Gloria Soli Deo Gloria is the Latin phrase
which is interpreted "To God Alone Be All Glory". It was a central
theme of the Reformation. Johann Sebastian Bach inscribed on all his
compositions, S.D.G., and carved Soli Deo Gloria into the organ at
Leipzig. The "Golden Age" of English Literature (with Spenser, Milton,
Herbert, Donne and Bunyan) was to a large extent driven by the concept
that each artist should strive to produce the most excellent work of
which he was capable with the chief end that his work be to the glory of
God (i.e. Soli Deo Gloria). The first question in the Westminster
Shorter Catechism is: What is the chief end of man? The answer is: To
glorify God and enjoy Him forever. At its core art goes beyond the
physical proficiency of the artist; it is a spiritual endeavor.
Since the theme Soli Deo Gloria fitly represents my purpose I have
chosen to inscribe on all signed prints S.D.G. as did those older
masters. To God alone be all glory. |
